9x12 Clock-eyed
The task for this project was specific to each student, but my objectives were to visualize a clock from an inside perspective, utilize strategies to create depth, display the contrast between man and machine, and highlight my drawing using brightly colored pencils. For this work, I used white pencil on 9x12 black paper as well as other colored pencils. I drew many mechanisms of a clock, like gears, and then part of the numbers from a clock in a semicircle surrounding a window outward, where a human eye is looking into the clock.
The key element of art that I created in this piece was color which I used to influence emphasis. I added color on the edges of the mechanical parts inside of the clock to emphasize them, but the most color in the image is in the eye, so the most emphasis is on that. It is important for these parts of the image to stand out because they are the main parts that tell the story inside of my drawing.
This piece displays the perspective of what it would look like to be inside of a clock, facing outward. It has a theme of how humans relate to machinery which can be seen in the eye looking into the inner workings of a machine. My piece has a sort of surreal and wild mood because of the neon colors and unique perspective.
A successful element of this piece was my use of highlighting with neon colors, which made my piece more interesting to look at and brought out the detail I put in. In this piece I think I could have made my piece look more complete if I planned out my composition more thoroughly and added a little more detail. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the process and final outcome. It was new and interesting to work with white on black, and I also enjoyed drawing a detailed eye. My final outcome could have been better, but I like it.
