9x12 City from tha Top
The task for this project was to create a scene of a city from a bird's eye view. The main skill we were working on was using a one-point perspective to create depth. We also used lots of value to create realistic buildings. To make the image, we used pencil.
The most prominent element of art used in this image is form. We really tried to make the buildings look as 3D as possible, and this added to the principle of design proportion. Because everything is realistically sized and the buildings recede into the image and get smaller as they go back, a great sense of proportion is created. This is important because it sells the viewer on the realism of the image.
This work has the story of a busy and thriving city with lots of interesting details. Because of the long shadows, it also appears to be a late afternoon mood. It is from the perspective of a helicopter or bird. Other than these, this work doesn't seem to have a theme or message.
I think I was very successful in utilizing one-point perspective, and I'm proud of how well this piece tricks the viewer's eye into believing it is real. I also think the work I put into adding detail makes the image much more intriguing. If I had more time, I could've improved the image by adding even more detail, as well as shading the buildings more. It became somewhat monotonous to draw most lines according to the vanishing point, but I'm glad I did it because I think the image turned out very well due to this.
