Previous to this class, I firmly believed that I wasn’t very good at drawing because I always drew incorrect proportions, unsteady lines, and had trouble making drawings 3D. I took photography classes and felt more adept in that medium. My major breakthroughs in this class however are that I can indeed draw realistically, but also that I don’t need to draw realistically to be a good artist. I feel that my still life had quite unbelievable dimensions, but the animal portrait from this semester is perhaps one of the most realistic drawings I have made, and I learned that with time and effort I can create a realistic drawing. On it, I succeeded in using accurate proportions, steady lines, and using value to add a 3rd dimension. More importantly though, after reviewing some of my favorite artists work, I realized lots of imperfections in it which helped remind me that a drawing doesn’t have to be perfect to invoke feeling. On my two self-directed drawings, I focused less on believability, and more on interesting elements.
I have always been motivated to create art, but this semester I have been especially motivated by illustration artists on social media. After discovering more and more artists, I found a specific style that I think is very cool, and I worked to replicate it. I was also motivated to practice drawing, as I’ve been focused on photography for all of my previous time at DHS.
I feel that my style is one that adds intensity and interest with more basic and abstract line work and shapes rather than depicting how these feelings would look in real life. I suppose this style reflects me because I’m not great at seeing things exactly as they are, and instead apply my own feelings to them. I hope that my art simply catches one’s eye and keeps them interested as well as lets them apply their own story to it. I want them to get a spark of feeling, but I don’t care what feeling that is.
Without art, especially when taking into account the plethora of ways one can create “art,” my life would be incredibly dull and uninteresting, and I would have no way to express myself. Having a place to create art in school makes the day much more bearable and interesting. This fact makes me hope to pursue art in my adult career, and I’ve applied to various media studies degrees at colleges.
