9x12 Orange Sun
The task for this project was in accordance to our self imposed objectives. For me, I wanted to create movement with shapes in the background, add lots of detail, use spot color, and create a realistic human form. To do this I first used pencil, then outlined everything in pen, and colored the background shapes with marker and the details on the character with colored pencil.
The key element of art in this piece is shape, in the character as well as the background. With these shapes, I aimed to create movement by making the shapes reach around the image in order to lead the eye around it. This is especially noticeable when looking at the shapes under the character which can lead you towards the shapes above him, then down his sword, and onto his face and chest to his shoes. This is important because it makes the piece interesting to look at.
In this piece there seems to be a story behind my character, some reason for him to be fighting, which creates a sort of mystery and intrigue. It is from a relatively basic perspective (from the side) but creates a unique mood because of the negative white space of the character's body and the background which contrasts all the bright colors. It simply has the purpose of creating something interesting to look at, and the theme of power and mysticality.
In this piece, I think the shapes were very successful in creating an interesting image as well as expressing the movement and intensity in the character. It might have been improved if I added more shading and tried to make it more 3D, but I like its simplicity also. I very much enjoyed drawing the shapes and coloring, but creating the first pencil outline of the character was pretty hard. I'm happy with the outcome because I accomplished all of my goals for this piece.
